1° EDITION of National Biennial Prize 2012

The Biennial National Prize – promoted by Fondazione Gianfranco Fedrigoni, European Institute for the History of Paper and Paper Sciences – is for the Author of a Masters Degree unpublished thesis that is relevant to topics associated with papermaking including one or more of the following specific themes: paper, paper mills, fabrication and production of paper, its uses, commerce of paper, entrepreneurial, jobs, cultural heritage, archiving, paper archaeology, art of watermarks, connected to the history of paper in science and technology, to the history of the paper industry, the history of economics, the history of typography, the history of print, bibliology, museology, historiography of paper.

On Friday, October 26, 2012, at 10am, in Fabriano at the headquarters of the Foundation, the selection board, composed of Dr. Giancarlo Castagnari (Vice-president of the Foundation and editor of the book Series of the History of Paper), Professor Emanuela Di Stefano (Professor at the University of Camerino, Macerata), and Professor Renzo Sabbatini (Lecturer at the University of Siena), met to decide who would be awarded the Biennial National Award. The award would be given to the author of an unpublished master's thesis on a topic relevant to the history of paper and related subjects. The Commissioners, who, in the months following the expiry date of July 31, 2012, examined the thesis submitted to the Secretary of the Foundation, found after careful and thoughtful reflection, that the award should be given to Dr. Emilio Macchia

Emilio Macchia - with a degree in "Comunicazione e Design per L'editoria" at ISIA (Istituto Superiore per le Industrie Artistiche) of Urbino (PU) - is the winner of € 5.000 (five thousand Euros), as publicised in the public bid of the BIENNIAL NATIONAL AWARD, Emilio Macchia is the author of the unpublished thesis Press to attack. Editoria e tipografia clandestina in Olanda 1940 - 1945.

The thesis deemed deserving of a special mention are:

- Metamorfosi di un processo artigianale nell’Ottocento: lo Scartafascio di Mele, dr Elisabetta Badia;

- Le carte da lucido: storia, analisi e conservazione dei supporti cartacei trasparenti, dr Eleonora Larghi;

- Conservazione del Ragionamento. Progetto di restauro del volume: “Ragionamento di M. Giuseppe Betussi sopra il Cathaio; luogo dello ill.s. Pio Enea Obizzi”, stampato a Padova nel 1573, dr Lorenza Troian.

The Foundation wishes to thank all those who participated in the award and hope- given the positive appreciation of the selection board for the quality of the theses submitted - hat studies in this area should continue, thus contributing to the circulation of knowledge, enhancement and promotion of paper in all its forms.

Emilio Macchia, on the occasion of the presentation of the 11th volume of the Series on the History of Paper, edited by the Fondazione G. Fedrigoni , European Institute of the History of Paper and Paper Sciences, - that created the cover of the volume - received from the President Alessandro Fedrigoni a Certificate of Merit.
