The project
The Corpus Chartarum Fabriano (CCF) is a catalogue of digital images of both watermarked and non-watermarked papers, manufactured in Fabriano over an uninterrupted span of eight centuries, from the late 13th century to the present day. The project involves the identification, cataloging, and digitization of the papers; this data is then uploaded to a cutting-edge database designed to meet the requirements of the relevant scientific community.
The team of the Corpus Chartarum Fabriano:
Giancarlo Castagnari | Project creator
Livia Faggioni | Co-creator and project coordinator
Giovanni Luzi | Digitalization, analysis and data editing manager
Fabio Moretti | Webmaster
The online sharing of the repertoire of watermarked papers from 1293 (the date of the oldest watermarked document preserved in Fabriano) to the beginning of the third millennium becomes presents a new fundamental tool for paper history and watermark studies. The CCF repertoire of watermarks, closely linked to the location of production and the location of discovery of these papers, opens up new areas of research and connects themes of historical, economic, technical, and artistic order, related to paleography, diplomatics, philology, and bibliography.
We also hope that the novel approach utilized by the Configurator (software program employed) will promote advances in the study of watermarks.
