The workshop "Il metodo tradizionale coreano della tintura della carta"
In the Year of Cultural Exchange between Italy and Korea 2024–2025—an initiative celebrating 140 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries and aimed at deepening mutual understanding and promoting friendship through culture—the Fedrigoni Fabriano Foundation, continuing its mission to develop advanced training programs in the field of paper conservation and restoration, organized a two-day workshop titled “The Traditional Korean Method of Paper Dyeing.”
The workshop was led by Professor Lee Seung-chul, artist and lecturer at Dongduk Women’s University in Seoul (South Korea), with the collaboration of Chiara Fornaciari da Passano, Head of the Paper Restoration Laboratory at the Vatican Museums. It took place in the conservation and restoration lab of restorer Stefania Zeppieri, a space established within the Foundation to serve as a meeting point and reference hub for research sectors focused on paper and watermark craftsmanship.
Held for the first time in Italy, the workshop offered restorers the opportunity to gain expertise in dyeing paper using 100% natural pigments, with the goal of applying these techniques in conservation work. Participants also learned traditional Korean methods which, when supported by cutting-edge scientific research, can be effectively applied to cultural heritage restoration.
The initiative promoted by the Fondazione Fedrigoni Fabriano, in collaboration with FEDRIGONI and Stefania Zeppieri Conservazione, has received the patronage of the Municipality of Fabriano, the Marche Region, the Korean Cultural Center, the Pia Università dei Cartai, and the CARIFAC Foundation, along with institutional support from the Archival and Bibliographic Superintendency of the Marche region.
